GOLDEN NUGGETS

When we think about January, our thoughts tend to think about new beginnings; a chance to start over.  While this is a wonderful hopeful outlook for the future, perhaps we should consider things that are old and have stood the test of time.  There are certain concepts that should not be eliminated just because they are not new. Some of these are family traditions, heritage, memories and knowledge.  As we age, all of these things give us valuable experiences and understanding that cannot be gained any other way.  Our past helps build our character and gives us the ability to draw from this vault of knowledge to create for ourselves a better future.  Think about all the things you haye done and how you rely upon your experiences to make the right decisions, In spite of the aches and pains, the loss pf some memory ,gray or no hair and wrinkles, God gave a special blessing to the elderly., In the Bible it states in Job 12;2 ”So with old age is wisdom and with length of days understanding.: Being a senior should  bring both wisdom and understanding.   In today’s world think about how important and necessary it is to have these two traits.  Stop treating old age as something terrible.  Instead embrace the blessing!

Remember When

Before chat rooms, there were CB radios. Citizens' Band radios were (and still are) largely used by truckers on the road to communicate with other drivers in their range. However, in the 1970s and in to the early 1980s, people across the United States, the UK, and Australia took back the meaning of "citizens' radio" and began to use the low-frequency radio waves to chat with other CB users. They had their own special slang terms and nicknames, and First Lady Betty Ford even got into the action. She was known by the CB handle "First Mama" when she crackled over the airwaves. “That's a big 10-4...over and out.”

 MILITARY SALUTE

Raised in Pratt City, Alabama, Gunner's Mate 1st Class Osmond Kelly Ingram had served in the U.S. Navy for 14 years when he leapt into action to save the USS Cassin from a German torpedo in 1917. Although the destroyer had maneuvered to avoid being hit, Ingram knew it could hit depth charges at one end of the ship and tried to release the charges but was killed in the resulting explosion. He was the first enlisted man in the U.S. Navy to die in World War I. Ingram received the Medal of Honor and had a destroyer, the USS Osmond Ingram, named for him.

 HUMOR ME

A blonde goes into a restaurant and notices there’s a “peel and win” sticker on her cup. So she peels it off and starts screaming, “I’ve won a motor home! I’ve won a motor home!” The waitress says, “That’s impossible. The biggest prize is a free lunch.”  But the blonde keeps screaming, “I’ve won a motor home! I’ve won a motor home!”  Finally, the manager comes over and says, “Ma’am, I’msorry, but, you’re mistaken. You couldn’t have won a motor home because we didn’t have that as a prize!”  The blonde says, “No, it’s not a mistake. I’ve won a motor home!” She hands the ticket to the manager and he reads   “WIN A BAGEL”

Brain Teaser

(Answer at the end)

A father told his three sons he would die soon and he needed to decide which one of them to give his property to. He said, “Go to the market and buy something that is large enough to fill my bedroom, but small enough to fit in your pocket. From this, I will decide which of you is the wisest and worthy enough to inherit my land.” They all went to the market, and each came back with a different item. The father told his sons to come into his bedroom one at a time and try to fill up his bedroom with their item. The first son came in and put some pieces of cloth he bought and laid them across the room, but it barely covered the floor. The second son came in and laid some hay on the floor, but there was only enough to cover half the floor. The third son came in and showed his father what he bought. He wound up getting the property. What did the third son show his father?

Our NonProfit of the Month:

Goodwill works to enhance people’s dignity and quality of life by strengthening their communities, eliminating their barriers to opportunity, and helping them reach their full potential through learning and the power of work.  Goodwill was founded in Boston by Reverend Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister and early social innovator. Helms created the Goodwill philosophy of “not charity, but a chance” when he collected used household goods and clothing in wealthier areas of the city, then trained and hired people who were poor to mend and repair the used goods. The goods were then sold or given to the people who repaired them. More than 120 years later, Goodwill remains a household name and leading nonprofit provider of educational and workforce-related services. Goodwill Industries International (GII) is based in Rockville, MD, outside of Washington, D.C. The Goodwill enterprise is a network of more than 150 community-based, autonomous organizations in the United States and Canada with a presence in several other countries, including Brazil, Finland, Italy and more. To meet the needs of their local communities, each local Goodwill organization designs its own programs and services to help people find work near where they live. Local Goodwill organizations are innovative and sustainable social enterprises that create job training programs, employment placement and other community-based programs by selling donated clothing and household items in more than 3,300 Goodwill stores (North America) and online at shopgoodwill.com® and other e-commerce platforms.

Sports Stories

The 1967 AFL-NFL Championship: The Birth of the Super Bowl

One must recognize the 1967 AFL-NFL World Championship Game in American football, which would retroactively become known as Super Bowl I. This game marked the beginning of the Super Bowl era, a yearly event that has become a highlight of the American sporting and cultural calendar.

Held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the game saw the NFL's Green Caesars Sportsbook Promo Code Bay Packers triumph over the AFL's Kansas City Chiefs, scoring 35-10. The Packers' quarterback, Bart Starr, was named the game's Most Valuable Player, throwing 250 yards and two touchdowns.

Despite the game not being a sell-out and the broadcast being less than smooth (CBS and NBC both covered the game, leading to some technical issues), the inaugural Super Bowl laid the groundwork for what would become one of the world's most signific annual sporting events.

SENIOR OF THE MONTH  -

January 2025

PAT BOONE

Pat Boone was born Patrick Charles Eugene Boone on June 1st, 1934, in Jacksonville, Florida.  Pat’s younger brother Cecil (also known as Nick Todd) was born on Pat’s birthday in 1935. When Pat was two, the family moved to Nashville, Tennessee where Pat spent his childhood and graduated from high school there.

Pat married Shirley Foley when they were both only nineteen years old.  They had a wonderful sixty-five-year marriage until Shirley died in 2019.  They produced four daughters, sixteen grandchildren and even more great grandchildren.

Pat sold almost fifty million records, starred in twenty-six movies and has the longest chart career (seventy years).

Currently he is the National Spokesperson for 60 Plus Association and hosts “The Pat Boone Hour” on Sirius FM’s ’50 Gold.

“April Love” is one of Pat’s favorite movies.  When The Senior Network was formed in the summer of 2021, they started planning their first fundraiser – a senior talent show.  It was held on April 22, 2022 at the Renaissance in Wake Forest, North Carolina and called “April Love Senior Talent Show” in honor of Pat Boone and his fabulous life.  Pat was not able to attend the event but did send a video welcoming everyone to the Renaissance.  This year, our fourth annual, will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025.  We will invite Pat again; we hope he will come!

Who’d A Thunk:

During World War II, the need for a synthetic rubber substitute was pressing. In 1943, Scottish-American engineer James Wright, working for General Electric, attempted to create such a material. While his concoction of boric acid and silicone oil wasn’t the rubber replacement he envisioned, it did possess some unusual properties. This gooey, yet bouncy substance wasn’t what Wright was looking for, so it was shelved.

However, this wasn’t the end of the story. A colleague used this unnamed material to entertain clients, one of whom was a toy seller named Peter Hodgson. Hodgson saw the potential in this stretchy and sticky material, and with some packaging and a new name (Nutty Putty), he presented it at the 1950 International Toy Fair. Silly putty could be described as one of the most fun inventions of the 1940s!

3 out of 4 Americans over the age of 60 have high blood pressure, also called hypertension, the ‘silent killer’.  High blood pressure typically has no symptoms., Stroke, kidney failure, heart disease, sexual dysfunction & aneurysms can all be caused by elevated blood pressure.

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli & kale, can lower blood pressure naturally.  These vegetables help lower blood pressure better than the consuming root vegetables such as sweet potatoes & carrots.

Some things we never outgrow, regardless of age. One of them is the need to set goals and keep pushing ahead. It doesn’t really matter if you are 60, 70, or 80. It doesn’t matter if you are retired or still working. Making New Year’s resolutions is a worthwhile practice, even if experience teaches us that old (bad) habits are hard to shake.

Setting New Year’s resolutions is especially beneficial for senior adults. Setting goals is good for the physical, mental, and spiritual health of seniors. Seniors with a strong sense of purpose tend to retain strong hand grips and walking speeds, signs of healthy aging. Seniors with discipline, organization and purpose are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. We all need reasons to get up and face each new day. Resolutions, or goals, give us purpose and structure. Here are some resolutions to consider:

Be a mentor and an encourager

Be an optimist

Get out of the house

Learn something new

Get your important documents in order NOW
